Mono is an open source and free. Originally developed by Ximian, it later was acquired by Novell and later by Xamarin, an independent software firm. Mono is able to run on most major software platforms. For the Mac, it is required to purchase Mac compatible versions of the software as well as the software installation disks. In most cases, this requirement is fulfilled through the software distributors.
The software is available free for general usage. A developer wishing to develop more advanced applications can consider purchasing the source code or paid licenses. In order to download the source code, one has to be a registered member with the organization. Once registered, they can download and install Mono in their systems.
The cost of Mono is not expensive, but it may be considered a disadvantage as the software is quite limited in its functionalities and capabilities. The Mac is capable of supporting the software and installing it without any problems. However, Mono is much more powerful and can easily meet the needs of developing great applications. In addition, the free software lacks the following advantages offered by the paid software: ability to integrate the software into other programs, cross platform compatibility and freedom from licensing and license fees. However, Mono is free to download and use for all users.
